After determining the pump type, consider its economic performance-specifically the head, flow rate, and the matching power source. It is crucial to note the difference between the rated head (total head) listed on the pump's nameplate and the actual discharge head (actual head) during operation; this discrepancy arises from resistance losses as water flows through the piping system. Consequently, the actual head is typically 10% to 20% lower than the total head, resulting in a corresponding reduction in water output.
Therefore, when estimating performance for actual use, base calculations on 80% to 90% of the rated head and flow rate. Regarding the power source, you may select a motor based on the rated power listed on the nameplate; however, to ensure rapid startup and safe operation, it is advisable to choose a motor with a power output approximately 10% higher than the pump's requirement. Alternatively, if a power source is already available, select a compatible pump based on that motor's power rating.
